Made-to-Measure
The barong is commonly known as a men’s garment, though there have been many women’s versions created and worn over the years. This Barong Bestida is a beautifully tailored piece with a stylized bishop sleeve and classic pleating on the back of the skirt. This new version of our classic Barong Bestida features Alaga at Sining's stunning hand-manipulated, machine-embroidered design of Vanda javierae, on the front bodice, skirt, and in a repeating pattern on the back bodice, skirt, and sleeves.
Vanda javierae is a species of flowering plant in the orchid family, Orchidaceae, which is endemic to the Philippines in Luzon and Calayan Island. It is known commonly as Mrs. Javier's Vanda, with flowers about 2.5" wide and mostly white. This species is an epiphyte, growing in island forest habitat, at elevations around 4000 feet. With the condition of unprotected forests in Luzon, subjected to disturbance and degradation, the population of this species is dwindling. According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature's Red List of Threatened Species, the Vanda javierae is classified as an endangered species.
